High Angle Services Video Transcript

Welcome to my world. My name is Jim Webster — I’m co-owner of High Angle Services. We specialize in the high and difficult sign installations. Our work takes us all over the United States, from coast to coast. We do a lot of helicopter lifts, a lot of rappelling, a lot of specialty rigging — pulling objects up beside these buildings, or letting them down the outside of the building. A lot of our work is done at night, and in all kinds of conditions.

We started this company with a handful of cash and a prayer. We started out with a rental boom truck, out on the side of the interstate hanging interstate signs. We’d do that during the day, and I’d drive a truck at night — until we got our first high-rise installation, about two months after we formed the company. Since then we’ve done numerous installations all over the place, and an extreme amount of helicopter lifts — probably more than anybody in the United States. We specialize in the height of difficulty: the stuff nobody else wants to do. My office is 50 stories off the ground.

The video you’re about to see is a compilation of clips from various jobs we’ve done over the past three or four years. I think it’s a pretty good representation of what we’re able to accomplish. Here we go.

In order to complete these jobs safely, there’s a whole lot that goes on behind the scenes — especially during the lifts. All of it has to be well orchestrated so it comes off nicely. We did all 20 lifts successfully. There was a little bit of a problem getting the big cabinets off the wall, but everything came off as it was supposed to. Taking the letters off the cabinets was a challenge because of their weight — around 2,600 pounds each. Getting those studs to pull out through the wall is quite a challenge, but we got it all off, didn’t do any damage to the building, didn’t break the glass — and I’ve still got all my fingers and toes, and so does everybody else.

We just finished our helicopter lifts on the Wells Fargo building behind me. We had four hours to complete these lifts, and we actually completed 22 lifts in about two hours and 45 minutes. The pilot, Stephon, did an excellent job — he was on it. The construction crew did a great job too; we had to fight, scratch and claw for every bit of progress. On a scale of one to ten for intensity, this one was probably a nine — it was very intense.

We’re going to drop this for the first time — this is for all the marbles. My crew performed flawlessly. The number of intended lifts was 13; I think we did about 16 or 17. It’s a lot more exciting than I’d like it to be. You have to be on your toes when they’re doing this work — you can’t take your eyes off it for a second, because it will come and get you. The adrenaline was flowing. Very intense, and kind of scary a couple of times — but it’s what we chose to do, so we just keep doing it. The conditions are different on every job, the stuff we lift is different; the only constants are my people, and sometimes the helicopter crew.

It’s Saturday, November 19th — it’s D-Day. You guys need to be safe. It’s windy as hell and it’s going to be very interesting today. Keep it off the glass… one foot away… put it down. There you go. Watch these things — get ready to push it off. Good job, guys. Grab that tagline, turn that thing — don’t yank it hard, keep coming down.

High Angle Services will take care of all the requirements set forth by the FAA and local municipalities — street closures, the hiring of police, the evacuation of buildings in the flight path, and the procurement of landing zones and staging areas. This is what we choose to do, and we try very hard to do a good job at it: being safe, and placing these signs in places where they probably shouldn’t go. We do what other folks can’t do, or won’t do — that’s what we specialize in. When it gets weird, we just turn professional.

In February of 2006, I took two employees for rope-access training for one week at Hoover Dam — learning rescue technique and basic rope skills, followed by SPRAT certification. That training changed everything in the way we use ropes for access to building façades, and gave me the confidence to safely deploy ropes for sign installation.
